In short
- Mounjaro is a prescription only medicine. Selling it without a prescription is illegal
- The pharmacy must be on the GPhC register in Great Britain or the PSNI register in Northern Ireland
- GPhC rules say weight must be verified by video, in person, or from your records. A phone call or a photo alone is not enough
- Prescribing decisions must not rest on an online questionnaire alone
- The MHRA says genuine products are pre-filled pens. Powder vials for mixing are not authorised
- Suspected fakes and side effects are reported through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme
You can buy Mounjaro legally in the UK only with a prescription, supplied by a pharmacy registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), or with the PSNI in Northern Ireland. A safe online purchase follows the same steps every time: a health consultation with a prescriber, an ID check, an independent check of your weight, a question about sharing details with your GP, then chilled delivery. If a seller skips these steps, the pen may be fake and you have no protection if something goes wrong.
The legal position
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a prescription only medicine in the UK. A pharmacy can supply it only against a valid prescription from a registered prescriber, such as a doctor, a pharmacist independent prescriber or a nurse prescriber. The prescriber has to assess you first.
The UK licence covers weight management in adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity. Prescribers check your BMI against these numbers before anything else. Mounjaro is not licensed for weight loss in under-18s, and is not used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
The MHRA states GLP-1 medicines should only be used if you are overweight or have diabetes, and not to lose weight for cosmetic reasons.
Step 1: Check the pharmacy is registered
Before you enter any health details, check the pharmacy on the public register.
- In Great Britain, search the GPhC register by the pharmacy's name, address or registration number.
- In Northern Ireland, search the register of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
- Make sure the address on the register matches the one on the website.
GPhC guidance says an online pharmacy's website must explain how to check its registration and the registration of its responsible and superintendent pharmacists. Where a separate prescriber is involved, the site must show the prescriber's registration number and the country they are registered in. You can check doctors on the GMC register, nurses on the NMC register and pharmacist prescribers on the GPhC register.
Step 2: The consultation
Expect a health questionnaire, followed by some form of two-way contact with the prescriber. GPhC guidance says prescribing decisions for weight loss medicines must not rest on a questionnaire alone. The prescriber has to be able to ask you follow-up questions.
You will be asked about:
- your weight, height and any weight-related conditions
- your current medicines, including insulin, gliclazide, warfarin and the contraceptive pill
- past pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, eye disease linked to diabetes, or severe gut problems
- pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to conceive
- any history of eating disorders
Answer honestly. These questions exist because the SmPC lists real risks for each one, and a prescriber who knows your history can adjust the plan.
Step 3: ID checks
The GPhC requires pharmacies to confirm you are who you say you are, using a check suited to the medicine. Most services use an electronic ID check, a photo of an ID document, or both. Passports and driving licences are the usual documents. If you have neither, the guide to ID checks without a passport lists the alternatives services tend to accept.
Step 4: Weight verification
Since February 2025, GPhC guidance has required the prescriber to verify your weight, height or BMI independently. "Independently" means using a different method from the one you used to give the information. The GPhC lists acceptable methods:
- a live video consultation
- an in-person check
- your clinical records
- contact with another provider, such as your GP
The GPhC says a phone call is not appropriate for weight loss medicines. A photograph or pre-recorded video supplied by you is not enough on its own for a first prescription. For repeat orders, a photo or video may be used once your starting weight has been verified another way, with progress checked at intervals.
Step 5: Consent to tell your GP
The prescriber should ask whether they can share the prescription with your GP. If you agree, they should send the relevant details. If you refuse, the prescriber must decide whether prescribing is still safe, and many services will not go ahead. The guide to whether online pharmacies tell your GP covers this step in full.
Step 6: Prescription, dispensing and delivery
Once the prescriber approves you, the pharmacy dispenses the pen with a label showing your name and dosing instructions. Most people start on the 2.5mg pen, which holds 4 weekly doses. The time from order to doorstep varies with the checks above, and the guide to how long a prescription takes breaks down each stage.
Mounjaro needs a cold chain. The patient leaflet says to store the pen in a fridge at 2C to 8C and not to freeze it. Keep a new pen refrigerated until you start it. After first use, the leaflet allows up to 30 days out of the fridge at no more than 30C, after which the pen must be thrown away.
When the parcel arrives:
- Open it straight away and check the ice packs are still cold.
- Check the pen is not frozen and the pack is sealed.
- Check the strength on the label matches your prescription.
- Check the expiry date and batch number are printed on the pack.
- Put the pen in the fridge, away from the freezer compartment.
If anything looks wrong, contact the pharmacy before using the pen. The guide to delivery options explains packaging, courier timings and what to do if you miss a delivery.
Red flags for a fake or unsafe seller
The MHRA has seized counterfeit pre-filled pens made to look like licensed weight loss medicines. Some fakes sent people to hospital with severe low blood sugar, and the MHRA has said they may have contained insulin. Walk away if a seller:
- sells without a prescription or a consultation
- trades through social media, messaging apps or a beauty salon
- offers powder in a vial for you to mix, which the MHRA says is not authorised
- has no pharmacy registration you can find on the GPhC or PSNI register
- does not ask for ID or a verified weight
- sends a pen with a foreign-language pack, no leaflet or no pharmacy label
- markets a prescription only medicine by name in adverts, which UK advertising rules ban
The MHRA's position is plain. The only way to be sure of a genuine GLP-1 medicine is to get it from a legitimate pharmacy with a prescription. The page on fake Mounjaro pens shows how to check a pen you already have. Report a suspected fake, or any side effect, through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Comparing services
Legitimate pharmacies charge different amounts for the same pen, and the gap between them changes often. The checks above should be the same at every service. Compare on price only once a service passes them. You can compare UK Mounjaro prices side by side, and look at what each price includes, such as delivery and ongoing reviews.
The NHS alternative
Mounjaro is also available on the NHS through a phased rollout under NICE guidance TA1026. In October 2026, GP practices in England can offer it to adults with a BMI of 35 or more and at least 4 of 5 named conditions, with a lower cut-off for some ethnic groups. The guide to Mounjaro on the NHS explains the cohorts and how to ask your GP.
Questions people ask
Can I buy Mounjaro without a prescription in the UK?
No. Mounjaro is a prescription only medicine, so any seller offering it without a prescription is breaking the law. The MHRA warns these products do not meet UK quality and safety standards and may be fake.
How do I know an online pharmacy is legitimate?
Search the pharmacy's name or address on the GPhC register, or the PSNI register in Northern Ireland. The website should show how to check its registration and the prescriber's registration number and country. Expect a real consultation, an ID check and a verified weight before anyone prescribes.
Why do online pharmacies ask for a video or photo of my weight?
GPhC guidance from February 2025 requires the prescriber to verify your weight, height or BMI independently. A video consultation, an in-person check or your clinical records are acceptable. A phone call is not, and a photo alone is not enough for a first prescription.
What should I do if my Mounjaro arrives warm or frozen?
Do not use a pen that has been frozen. Contact the pharmacy straight away and describe the packaging, the ice packs and the time it arrived. Keep the pen in the fridge at 2C to 8C until they tell you what to do.
Is it safe to buy Mounjaro from social media or a beauty salon?
No. The MHRA says GLP-1 medicines should not be bought from unregulated sellers such as beauty salons or via social media. It has seized counterfeit pre-filled pens made to look like licensed products.
Can I get Mounjaro on the NHS instead?
Possibly. In October 2026, GP practices in England offer it to adults with a BMI of 35 or more and at least 4 of 5 named conditions. The cut-off is 2.5 lower for some ethnic groups. Ask your GP whether you qualify.
